ペン型採血針は、連続した針管の両端に鋭利な刃先を備えた構造となっています。 針管の中下部が持針器に取り付けられています。 先端を静脈穿刺針、後端を採血針と呼びます。 臨床では、採血は持針器や使い捨て血管採血と組み合わせて行われるのが一般的です。 使用時は、採血針を回転させて持針器の外管先端に固定し、静脈穿刺を行う。 手術が成功したら、採血針の後端の刃先が血液遮断スリーブを通過し、真空チューブのゴム栓を突き刺すように、真空採血管を針ホルダーの後部空洞に挿入します。負圧の作用により、血液が採血管に送り込まれます。 この繰り返しにより、複数のチューブから血液サンプルを収集できる場合があります。
